Seventy-seven years ago today (in 1933) Western Union began sending singing telegrams, expanding what the telegram business from what had been primarily the harbinger of bad news into something much more acceptable. Sounds a little like the Church these days. More and more people have only bad stories to connect to the church: deaths, funerals, ostentatious weddings that didn’t take. But you and I know differently. The chorus of the old song His Eye is On the Sparrow says, “I sing because I’m happy; I sing because I’m free. His eye is on the sparrow; and I know He watches me.” What are you happy about? Who do you know who could use a little cheering up today? How about giving them a ring and send a little song their way? Yes, even if you can’t carry a tune – smile.
